At Your Work - Expressions You May Use

Hokkien lang, please invite more Hokkien friends to check on Hokkien materials on my website and Youtube. Mother tongue is so meaningful. Cantonese people in Kwangtung, China, recently protested against the attempt to do away with their mother tongue and replace with Mandarin. Will Hokkien people have the same sentiments? No, no, we are not against Mandarin but our mother tongue should be preserved and pass down to the next generation. It should not be phased out. That's the point. I am back posting new materials. I had an operation and was hospitalized for couple of weeks. Hence, the inactivity. Tui4 put1 chu3

I wanted to continue with part 3 of addressing relatives but then decided against it. To give a fresh focus, I change topic. Hope you enjoy.

Hokkien - 10 Problems You May Face

Hokkien is spoken by about 35 million people worldwide. However in many places, Hokkien is set to become extinct in the next generation. Even in China, young Hokkiens speak Mandarin rather than Hokkien.

A recent TV reality cooking competition in South-East Asia, a group of young men in a predominantly Hokkien region spoke everything in Mandarin - not a single word in Hokkien.  However, Cantonese men use Cantonese to express themselves - comfortably and naturally. I admire the Cantonese. They value and are proud of  their mother tongue and so are their forebears.

However, a number of Hokkiens look down,  ashamed to use their mother tongue - being unable to express themselves properly. That shows the extend of neglect or apathy by them and their forebears especially the immediate ones.

Mandarin is the lingua franca for Chinese people when interdialectic communication becomes a problem. But we must use Hokkien our mother tongue with the 35 million and preserve it. If you don't value what you have, no one is going to respect and appreciate what you have. Can you do something and will you?

Hokkien - 7 Wise Sayings

Hello, Welcome Here!

by aokh1979 » Mon Mar 29, 2010 2:52 am

To me, Taiwanese are more easily understood than Xiamenese. I live in Xiamen for 7 years now, I visit Quanzhou and Zhangzhou, too. Sad to say, Xiamenese may be the "standard" for Minnan in China, but Xiamenese may also be the 1st Minnan variant to extinct if younger parents give up Xiamenese and speak to their children in Mandarin. I have seen so many of these people. Both husband and wife are local Xiamense grew up in Old Town area (where Xiamenese was most widely spoken), but speak to their children completely in Mandarin without any single word in Minnan. I observe my colleagues everyday, none of them can hold a comversation entirely in Xiamenese, at least 30% will be spoken in Mandarin very naturally. People say Xiamenese may die away in 20 years. With the growing speed like this today, I foresee it's going to be 10 years.

Hokkien - 10 Praiseworthy Expressions

Hokkien is the surviving language of the Tang Dynasty (618-907AD), China 's Golden Age of Culture. Note: The Hokkien we hear today have "evolved" from its original form 2,000 years ago, but it still retains the main elements of the Tang Dynasty Language.
Hokkiens are the surviving descendants of the Tang Dynasty -- When the Tang Dynasty collapsed, the people of the Tang Dynasty fled South and sought refuge in the Hokkien ( Fujian ) province. Hence, Hokkien called themselves Tng-lang (Tang Ren or People of the Tang Dynasty) instead of Hua Lang (Hua Ren).

The collection of the famous "Three Hundred Tang Dynasty Poems" sound better when recited in Hokkien/Teochew if compared to Mandarin.

Consider this for a moment: Today, the Hokkien Nam Yim ochestral performance still has its roots in ancient Tang dynasty music. Here's the proof: The formation of today Nam Yim ensemble is typically seen in ancient Tang dynasty paintings of musicians.

Although not genetically-related, Hokkiens, Koreans and Japanese share many similar words (which are different from Mandarin).

That's because Hokkien was the official language of the powerful Tang Dynasty whose influence and language spread to Japan and Korea (just like Latin – where many words were borrowed by the English, French, Italian, etc).

I am a Filipino-born Chinese. Both my parents are mixed; they are both Kapampangan Chinese. My last name is Chinese, and many of my ancestors' last names are Chinese. Though both my parents are mixed, they can fluently speak Hokkien, and so can many of my grandparents and other relatives. We are Catholics/Christians, though we still practise Buddhism and Daoism and frequently visit temples. Culturally, I believe that we are Chinese, for we still celebrate things such as the Lunar New Year and practise Chinese customs. We also practise Kapampangan customs and traditions, and can speak Kapampangan. I moved to the United States in 2000, and I am currently living in the Deep South. I have also resided in Los Angeles. I can speak three languages fluently: Kapampangan (which I would consider my first language, as I was born in Pampanga), English, and Spanish. I also know some Kreyol French. However, I am disappointed that my parents did not teach me Hokkien. Any tips so that I can learn it?

RunLao378, you can come here. Chinahistoryforum.com is unaware when they say there is no English website that teaches Hokkien. This website (Speak Hokkien Well) is about the first no-nonsense website to do so.

Hokkien and Mandarin?
The answer: Hokkien should remain our mother tongue. We should never sacrifice our mother tongue for Mandarin. Yet, Mandarin is the language to identify all Chinese in general as Hokkien is the language to identify the Hokkiens. That we should appreciate. The mastering of Mandarin posed little problems as formal education is readily available for the next generation. However, the mastering of Hokkien is in peril. Out of 10 Hokkien parents, I can safely say only 1 or 2(rarely) really take the trouble to speak to their children in Hokkien. The rest use Mandarin, English, Thai, Khmer, Indonesian, Vietnam, Tagalog etc to talk with their young. The general apathy is getting stronger. The day will come when some people will claim to be Hokkiens but cannot speak a single word of it. This is happening in some countries and will spread to others. Mark my words.

Hokkien - 8 Effective Expressions To Drive Home Your Message

The use of Mandarin has also replaced the use of other Chinese dialects, Hokkien in particular, for intra ethnic communication in some domains.  Hokkien is known and still used, but mostly by older Chinese and the less educated.  Mandarin is still by and large a High (H) language, while Hokkien remains dominant in hawker centers, on buses, etc. (Kuo & Jernudd, 2003). Language Policies Impact

Please remember that ‘Pupil Own Language’ (POL) in schools is always assumed to be the mother tongue of Chinese pupils - Mandarin. While learning Mandarin is important- no dispute about that-Chinese pupils do not learn their mother tongues formally. The fact for many is, Mandarin is NOT our mother tongue. Yet, this misunderstanding persists worldwide. People everywhere assume that Chinese(Mandarin) is the mother tongue of all Chinese people. Please do some research about Mandarin and its origin to understand this situation.

Be Proud To Speak Proper Hokkien- Preserve The Heritage.

Hello, Welcome Here!
Comment:
"Hokkien is a dying language, thanks to the new generation. It is one of the oldest chinese dialect but the new generation, especially the chinese themselves are not proud of using it. Today, they are slowly replaced by mandarin. For example in places like Penang, where Hokkien flourished, today sees the increase of mandarin speakers. Also when you speak Hokkien to them even in shops, chances that most times you will receive reply in mandarin. Unless something is done to promote the usage of Hokkien, it would bring the demise of the language. As China continue to regain its position in the world stage, I realise that Malaysian Chinese tends to worship mandarin more and neglect their own heritage. Someday, there might be nothing left to give to the next generation."

Here are 8 ways to preserve the Hokkien heritage:

1. We need to improve our Hokkien vocabulary and widen its use.

2. Teach and communicate in Hokkien with our children, relatives and friends.

3. Watch Hokkien puppet shows, stage shows and operas.

4. Watch Hokkien movies.
